Nasa scientists at the Jet propulsion laboratory in Pasadena, California, burst into applause as they receive confirmation that their Curiosity rover has landed on Mars at 10.30pm on Sunday local time (6.30am Monday BST). The Mars Science Lab has travelled 350m miles since its launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in November 2011
